In this WowWee CHiP Review we’re going to tell you about CHiP the robot dog, what you can expect when un-boxing him and how to get started with CHiP, we will also note some of the features and what this evolutionary robotic toy can actually do.
Sony was the first to introduce a robotic pet. They named it AIBO and it was 16 years ago. The concept of owning a robotic pet wasn’t very popular due to the high price tag as well as the fact that technology just wasn’t quite there yet. Technology has developed at a rapid pace and we’ve reached a point whereby you can now obtain a far smarter robotic pet at a mere fraction of the price. This has resulted in some of the best deals we have ever seen on robotic toys. AIBO was about $2000, and now at Amazon.com you can get CHiP for, literally, a tenth of that price, now at only $139. The new robotic toys are also sleeker, more maneuverable and incorporate mind-boggling artificial intelligence (AI). Perhaps at the head of these new-age robotic pet toys is the WowWee CHiP.

WowWee CHiP Review
What’s the Robotic CHiP Dog All About?
You may be wondering how this robot dog works. CHiP is an intelligent and emotive robot pet dog. You can call the robot dog what you wish but for the sake of this review we will assume he’s a male and his name is CHiP. Although he is a robot, he was designed to function and behave similarly to a real dog or puppy. He has Mecanum wheels which give him a huge amount of maneuverability, not just forwards and backwards but side to side and even diagonally, this gives him agility like a real dog. He also has 3 main accessories which he can connect with and which really add to the overall experience. WowWee employed real-time processors so that this robotic toy can actually listen, feel, speak and make sense of his environment independently. He has an adaptive personality and over time his character will change in accordance with how you interact with him, leaving you with your very own unique robot dog. Un-boxing and Getting Started
When you receive the WowWee CHiP you will find a few items in the package. First off, the packaging is great and keeps everything secure. Once un-boxing is complete, you will find one robot dog, one SmartBand, one SmartBed and one SmartBall. There is also a few wheel guards and a user’s manual. The SmartBall requires four AAA batteries which aren’t included.
To start CHiP up, press the ON button located under the flap on his belly/chest. He is voice-responsive and a list of commands can be found in the user’s manual or on the WowWee CHiP app. The app can be downloaded from Google Play or the AppStore and is available for both Android and iOS. The app unlocks a ton of cool features, a dashboard of performance and allows you to change various settings. The CHiP Robot Dog will be partially charged but you may want to plug in his SmartBed and allow him to run over to it to charge up a bit before playing with him. When getting started, you will want to note the following about the this robotic dog:
The band included is a watch-type device that you should wear on your wrist. This allows CHiP to locate and track you and enhances game-play. The band can be used to send various commands to your robot pet dog as well as give him positive reinforcement by pressing a button when he performs well or reprimand him when he behaves badly. This allows the learning to begin and the journey to your very own trained robotic dog to kick off. The band pairs with the toy via Bluetooth. If you ever want the robot dog’s attention you can hit the “CHiP” button at the center of the band. There’s also a button that will make CHiP follow you wherever you go and another that will instruct him to play with his ball.
-Plays With a SmartBall
CHiP’s ball is his favorite toy. As stated earlier it requires four AAA batteries. The moment you turn it on the synching process will begin and CHiP will become very excited. This accessory incorporates BeaconSense technology which enhances the Bluetooth connectivity to ensure CHiP has a strong signal when chasing it. The ball also has sensors included in all its sides so as to keep the signal strong regardless of the axis upon which it rolls or the angle at which it comes to a rest. You can play Fetch with CHiP by either voicing “Fetch” to him or pushing the “Fetch” button on the band. Then roll the ball for him and watch him chase after it, lock it between his front paws and return it for another throw.
-Has Built-In Sensors
WowWee went out of their way to try and make CHiP as interactive and responsive as possible. He features a mic and speakers which allow him to hear and make a variety of sounds. He can bark, cry and even yawn after he’s had a good rest on his SmartBed. He has Voice-Recognition Technology that allows you to grab his attention by saying “Hey CHiP,” after which you can give him a range of commands. When his eyes turn green it signals one of two things, either that he acknowledges you and is ready for a command as in the above case or that he is paired with a device via Bluetooth. Both of which simply mean you’re connected and he is awaiting further instruction. The user manual or app can give you a full list of the commands, however here is a short list of some:
- Sit Down
- Wanna Play
- Good Dog
- Love You
- Let’s Dance
- Come Here

However if you’re looking for the closest thing to a real dog without the allergies, dirt, mess, potty training, furniture chewing and long walks then you’re in luck because this is the perfect robot pet dog for you.
Another thing to mention here is that there was some customer feedback on how noisy the wheels and motors can be on certain floors, specifically wooden floors.
